| LCAG have been informed that there are plans to re-lay some of the footpaths and also to carry out some drainage work on site. In addition they will perform management work on some of the trees. We are arranging an on site meeting with those responsible for the the work from WMDC. More information will be posted as we get it. In the meantime, should anyone know of more details please post them on this forum. |

| If you've recently ventured around Lofthouse Colliery Park Nature Area and alongside Lingwell Gate Beck below the Golf course from Lingwell Nook Lane to the Pond, you'll already be aware that work has started to cut back the trees and shrubs that had overgrown the path. Equipment used to clear the area is at a premium so the Council maintenance workers have had to take advantage of usage time. This means they have cut first and will be clearing up later! The workers do have a pride in the job that they do and have promised us excellent results and a good quality path in this area by this time next year. |

| You may have noticed that work has stopped on the footpaths in the nature area and in case you are wondering what's happening or if that's it! The WMDC team have been kept busy elsewhere but are due to be back with us mid December (07!). |

| Work to resurface the footpaths in the nature area have temporarily been out on hold until funding is secured. WMDC hope to start work again by Summer 2008. |

Hi all
Thanks for the news Red Admiral, autumn is a very good time to make changes, as the vegetation has all died back, and any disturbance to the area will recover very quickly the following spring.

| Join us for a Community Workday to do practical tasks on Lofthouse Colliery Park on Saturday, 16th February 2008 from 10am until 3pm. With guidance from the Community Wildlife Rangers from Coalfield Heathland Project, Sheffield Wildlife Trust we will be clearing birch scrub - cutting birch seedlings off the area of heathland to prevent it taking over the heather and seeding the top/highest point of the nature area with heather seed in an attempt to create a new area of heathland. Bring suitable clothing and footwear and a packed lunch. Tools will be provided. Meet at the gates at the end of Colliery Approach and make yourself known to the Committee wearing the Hi Viz waistcoats and sign in for duty. |

| B&Q are offering organisations the chance to win between £1k & £10k of B&Q products supporting the One Planet Living principles. The deadline is 28th March to submit an application for a project which will make a considerable positive difference to the area we live. Work must be completed between between May and September. OPL principles are: the Enviornment/Energy Saving or Natural Habitats/Wildlife or Local Culture/Heritage. Can you come up with an imaginative idea that we can make an application for to benefit our park and the local community and what B&Q products would it involve? More information can be found at www.diy.com/awards and www.oneplanetliving.org |

It is sometime since I have visited this forum, and I wonder how many local people bother to visit this site, never mind the forum, now that many of the objectives have been acheived by the Lofthouse Colliery Action group.
With regards to the many paths around the park, the group have been campaigning constantly to get them all upgraded to a standard where people can walk them without having to rely on the good old wellies!
To some degree the group have been succesful in acheiving their aims in that they were partly responsible for having the bridleway relaid by the council. This is the one which runs down through the golf course from Langley and around to the pond area .It did take some time and wasnt very pleasing on the eye whilst the work was being done. But once completed, what a differance it made. With luck, and much persuasion and hard work from the group, the remainder of the footpaths around the park will be done by next summer. I know thats some time away, but Rome wasn't built in a day,and with only a dozen willing pairs of hands these things do take time.
I hope that this little update has been of some use to someone, and if anyone wishes to become involved in helping the group then please send an email via this web site.
Thank you |
