Having stumbled across the excellent website of Outwood Community Video Group www.outwoodcommunityvideo.co.uk following a website search for history of Lofthouse Colliery. I have been informed that they welcome new visitors every Tuesday at 7:30pm at Outwood Memorial Hall. I look forward to meeting with them and learning more about the history of the Lofthouse Colliery site and surrounding areas. Maybe the group can also help LCAG with current shots of the site for this website and help record images of the future improvements that we intend to make happen on the site? Fingers crossed x

Met the Club last Tuesday and had a lovely evening with them looking at old photographs of the area. Go along and join them when you get chance and they will offer you a very warm welcome.

Try checking out Roman point farm as a starting point , there are well documented cases of roman activity there. Also the mysterious case of coin forgery on the site.

Hi all
The ghost story went world wide on the BBC this Wed.
The club website averages 50 visitor a day.
Between 12 pm and 2pm on Wed the site had 15,000 visitors, our server closed down the site thinking it had been hacked.
They contacted the club and I am pleased to say the site is back up again.
Just goes to show the power of the BBC.

Hi all
Here are a few more interesting facts
As a club of volunteers we organise special events for members, the day in question was a walk from Outwood to Wakefield (3mile), using public footpaths.
As some of our members are disabled, therefore could not go along, we decided to film our journey.
The film was taken on a Sunday morning walk, the weather was windy the sky was 50% clouds,
We have done some research of the area and found that, Roman coins have been found . A horde of them was found near Aberford Road in 1812 (about 100 yards from where our film was taken) and weighed over 40-lb. A pot containing 7,198 third brass coins was found while a field belonging to Smalley Bight Farm was being ploughed in 1905. These belonged to the first half of the fourth century.
Just over the hedge was the "Deep Drop Pit". On Tuesday 4th March 1879 there was a massive explosion at the pit and 21 miners lost there lives.
A bit more info that may help.
Put the following post code in Google Earth WF3 4DN The path goes from top left to bottom right crossing Rooks Nest Road. at the bottom half of the screen there is fields. where the top right corner of centre obolong field meet the path that is the spot. near the paths that looks like a star fish. the tree mound just above the pond is where the Deep Drop Pit was.
The following co-ordinates are the exact spot where the ghost was seen, 53 42 39.16N, 01 28 51.94W copy and paste into Google Earth, the path runs from top left to bottom right, the small corpse just below the above co-ordinates is where the Deep Drop mine was located.

Facinating stuff. Should we organise a walk around our Park and it's surrounding area to learn more about our local history & heritage?
